Accounting Certifications

Accounting is a profession with multiple certifications for employees at all career levels.  These days, nearly everyone in the profession – clerks, bookkeepers, accountants, tax professionals and auditors, not to mention more than one hundred other job titles – earns professional certifications to win the best job and increase their income.

With more than 500,000 CPAs in the United States, the Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) certification is the most well-known professional designation for accountants, but it’s far from the only one.

Entry-level jobseekers in accounting try to set themselves apart from other candidates by earning a Microsoft Office certification (especially Microsoft Excel), an Intuit Quickbooks certification or passing the Certified Bookkeeper Examination.

Taking and passing college-level courses in Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Business Statistics and Financial Accounting are also helpful as you climb the career ladder.  Earning an associates or bachelors degree in accounting, mathematics or business is the most dependable route to growing your career in accounting.

At higher levels of the profession – beyond the CPA – the certification ladder continues with the CMA (Certified Management Accountant), the CFM (Certified Financial Manager), the CFM (Certified Financial Planner), the CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) and numerous additional designations.
